Useful Apps — Korea
Download these before you land. All free, all have English.
Naver Map — your Google Maps replacement
Google Maps barely works in Korea (walking/transit directions are blocked by local regulation). Naver Map does everything: transit routes, walking directions, restaurant reviews, real-time bus arrivals. Use it for every "how do I get there." Set the language to English in settings.
Kakao T — taxis without the hassle
Korea's Uber equivalent for hailing licensed taxis. Enter destination in English, pay by card in-app, no Korean needed, no fare negotiation. Essential after midnight or with luggage. (Blue "Venti" = larger van option for groups.)
Papago — the translator that actually works
Naver's translator, noticeably better than Google Translate for Korean. The camera mode translates signs, menus, and medicine boxes live. The conversation mode handles real-time back-and-forth with shop staff. Download the Korean offline pack before your flight.
Subway Korea (or KakaoMetro) — never lost underground
Seoul's subway has 20+ lines. These apps show the fastest route, transfer stations, which car to board for the quickest exit, and first/last train times. Check the last-train time before a late night out — missing it means an expensive taxi. Both apps work in English and cover Busan and other cities too, so keep one installed for the whole trip.
Bonus for heavy riders: 2026 added short-term Climate Card day passes — 1 day ₩5,000 / 3 days ₩10,000 / 7 days ₩20,000, Seoul-only, card ₩3,000 from a Line 1–8 station kiosk. If you'll ride 4+ times a day, it beats pay-per-ride. The pass activates on the day you charge it and runs for the calendar days purchased.
Also handy: Incheon Airport limousine bus tickets
If you'd rather pre-book your airport ride than figure out the subway on arrival, buy limousine bus tickets at the airport bus ticket machines or the official airport site before boarding — Terminal 2 departures are ticket-only. Compare with our airport arrival guide first — for 3+ people a taxi often wins.
Bonus: what NOT to rely on
- Google Maps — driving works, transit/walking largely doesn't in Korea.
- Apple Maps — same limitation.
- Uber — operates in Korea but with limited coverage; Kakao T is the default.
